FY-2011 Captain Selections
Please join me in congratulating the members of our community who have been selected for promotion to the rank of Captain:
CDR Janis Carlton
CDR Joseph Clem
CDR John Lyszczarz
CDR Steven Wechsler
Our new Captains-to-be are alerted to the fact that for the first time in their careers, they will have asymmetric rank devices. Like dextro and levo isomers the rank devices exhibit handedness. So it pays to know how they are worn before one gets to the promotion ceremony and shows up with the wrong one (if it's a collar pinning ceremony). Here's how it works. If the devices are off the midline, the eagles face forward or toward the wearer's midline. If the device is on the midline, the eagle faces the wearer's right.
Last point, I would like to remind everyone that there is no such rank in the Navy as Captain (select), it doesn't exist. The selected officer holds the rank of Commander until promoted. I know you see CAPT (select) used all the time, but it's not only silly, it's wrong. I once saw the signature block of a Lieutenant selected for promotion who was calling himself LCDR (select). That young man had one really needy ego.

Once there was a Navy chaplain who took his eagles off and threw them on the floor. He looked that LCDR (select) in the eye and told him the rank was for someone else. At that moment , that Navy Chaplain had more power than Moses with his staff and more stars than the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. On that day, the LCDR (select) came to understand the true meaning of leadership. Not to mention he learned the power and role of spirituality in mental health. To this day, that former LCDR (select) would go to hell and back for that Chaplain and always asks his patients about hope and spirituality during the diagnostic assessment.
I'm so thankful for the wise scorn and admonishment we all get every year from our dear friend Doug...who has the audacity to call someone else out on their ego.
