Ahoy
On this day in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell made his first successful telephone call. Instead of "hello" when answering a call, Bell insisted on "ahoy," which he used his entire life. Thomas Edison preferred "hello." Edison prevailed. Source: The Writer's Almanac.

San Diego Super Carriers
An aerial view of San Diego's three aircraft carriers, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). The carriers are berthed at Naval Air Station North Island, which is across the bay from the city of San Diego. If you enlarge the image you can see in the background the famous Hotel Del Coronado, a red-roofed white building directly above the superstructure of Nimitz.

Kuwait Journal
The Mental Health building is just a block away from the pool at Camp Arifjan. Enlarge this photo to see if you can find a woman.
And here I am in my tiny room at Camp Arifjan in 2005. The room meets specifications for single housing of an Army E-9. The Army expresses their gratitude to the Navy by putting two Captains in the same room.

Me and My Canteen
BUD/S trainees are never separated from their canteens. Here, just before entering the pool, each trainee places his canteen to the left of his left foot. The white band on the canteen is tape inscribed with the trainee's name in waterproof ink. In case of confusion the canteens and trainees are in alphabetical order.

Search and Rescue Swimmers
Students at SAR Swimmer School pull a big-ass Ford truck. How this contributes to swimmer prowess eludes me. But this is what I feel like about now, trying to budge a big, heavy object called the Braceland 10 meters to the finish line.

Underway
It doesn't get any better than this. Pulling out a few hundred meters to provide medical response for helo training. The square red bag on the edge of the boat is corpsman gear. Once it's done, you head back to the ship for a free lunch.

Loaded With Empathy
Our civilian counterparts sometimes have a notion that wearing uniforms and the hierarchical rank structure must inhibit the doctor-patient relationship. What would they think if they knew we were packing heat? Above, an armed and not-at-all dangerous CAPT Peter True makes a house call in Iraq.
