San Diego BOQs

San Diego has six BOQs to choose from (click map to enlarge). The star on the map shows the location of the San Diego Convention Center. The Braceland Seminar will be held within walking distance of the Convention Center. You will need a rental car if you stay at a BOQ. If your command denies your rental car request, argue that it will be cheaper to stay in a BOQ with a car than it would be to pay the government rate at a hotel without a car. If they still deny the car, get one anyway, because you will want one. If you plan to see Shamu or go golfing at Torrey Pines, you will need a car. Here’s a description of the BOQs:

1. Naval Submarine Base Point Loma, 619-553-9381. Located at the outlet of San Diego Bay overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Quiet base with a gas station and small exchange, but no beach.

2. Admiral Kidd Inn, Antisubmarine Warfare Base, 619-524-0557. Large BOQ with its own marina, close to the airport, situated in a residential neighborhood with restaurants nearby.

3. Marine Corps Recruit Depot, 619-524-4401. Picturesque base with the best Exchange in town. Easiest access to I-5. Very proper. The party atmosphere that went down at the Econo Motel in Atlanta a couple of years ago would not go over well here.

4. Naval Base San Diego (32nd St), 619-556-8672. Large base, out of the way, dead at night. Although the base has a Commissary and a major Exchange complex, they are not within walking distance of the BOQ, and there is no shuttle bus.

5. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, 619-437-3860. High-rise BOQ on the base where BUDS is located. If you want to go running on the beach, this is the place.

6. Naval Air Station North Island, 619-545-7545. Country club atmosphere. You might feel a little shabby parking your rented Mazda 3 next to the aviator's BMW Z4, but no one will know when you are sunning by the pool. Golf course, tennis courts, and the best private beach in town.
